First Dental Visit

What To Expect At Your Child's First Dental Visit

little girl in dentist chair having first dental visit, Augusta, GA Pediatric Dentist

Has your child’s first tooth appeared? This can be such an exciting time for parents (not to mention, the first couple of baby teeth are so darn adorable!). Of course, now that their teeth are coming in you may be wondering if you should start bringing your child into the office for dental cleanings. After all, you see the dentist twice a year so why shouldn’t your baby?

First Visit With Your Augusta, GA Pediatric Dentist

The purpose of the first dental visit is to get your little one acclimated to and comfortable with seeing the dentist. The sooner we can create a positive image when it comes to visiting the dentist the easier routine dental checkups will be for your child. The first visit allows us to establish rapport with both you and your child. To help keep your child calm and relaxed, you may choose to hold them the whole time and bring a toy or item that helps them feel safe and secure like a blanket or teddy bear.

Dr. Moses will check your child’s erupting teeth and the health of their gums to make sure everything looks healthy, but only if we see decay will we actually clean the teeth. Mostly we just want to make sure that your child’s smile is hitting those important developmental milestones and that their teeth and gums are healthy. After all, any and all teeth are prone to decay, even those newly erupted baby teeth. So, it’s important that you bring your child in every six months for cleanings and exams. If your child is dealing with any dental issues or they are at an increased risk for decay, your Augusta dentist may recommend bringing them in even more frequently to monitor any changes.

Bring Questions with You

This dental visit is as much about the parents as it is about their child. If you are a first-time parent you may have some questions or concerns about thumb sucking, how to brush their teeth or clean their mouths between feedings, or what your child should and shouldn’t eat. We are happy to answer any and all questions you may have, so please write them down and bring them with you to your child’s first dental appointment.

If it’s time to bring your little one into the office for their first dental cleaning then call us and let us know this is the first time your baby is coming in so that we can make the very first visit a comfortable and easy one for the whole family.
