Fluoride Treatments For Your Child

Where can fluoride be found?

There are many fluoride sources, but the most common source is tap water. Of course, not all tap water contains fluoride so it’s important to check. If fluoride isn’t present in your tap water you may choose to purchase fluoride tablets to place in your child’s water, or purchase fluoridated water.

Fluoride can also be found in toothpaste; however, it's important to look at the list of ingredients since not all toothpaste contains fluoride. The amount of fluoride your child needs will depend on their age, and children should not use fluoride toothpaste until 3 years old when they are capable of safely spitting out toothpaste.

Is fluoride potentially unsafe?

There is no link between fluoride use and health problems. The most common issue caused by excessive fluoride exposure is known as dental fluorosis, which causes bright white spots or streaks to develop on your child’s teeth. Mild forms of fluorosis won’t cause discomfort or affect the health of your child’s teeth. You won't have to worry about fluorosis once your child's permanent teeth come in.

Should my child get fluoride treatment from a pediatric dentist?

Some children may need to turn to us for fluoride treatment. While this won’t be necessary for all kids it may be if they aren’t getting the fluoride they need from drinking water or other sources. This is something that we can discuss with you during your child’s next checkup.

Is my child getting enough fluoride?

One way to determine whether your child is getting enough fluoride is getting a cavity-free report from your Augusta pediatric dentist during their six-month checkup; however, your dentist can also provide your child with in-office fluoride treatments twice a year. If in doubt, talk to Dr. Moses about fluoride treatment.

If you want to discuss fluoride treatment with our dental team to see if your child could benefit, call our Augusta, GA, dental office today at (706) 863-6262 to schedule an appointment with Dr. Tina Moses and her team.
